  • road trip

I did not have baby girl today,  Grampy did.  William took a day off and we took Matthew to the game farm/petting zoo and to Erie Canal Village.  We had gone to both of these places before with our children and thought it would be fun to go back and this time, take Matt.  He had a good time at the game farm and at the petting zoo, the animals could tell when you had food for them and they would crowd around you and try to get it.    It was funny to watch Matt try to pick one to feed when so many were hounding him to be feed.

Hey kid, got anything to eat in your back pocket?????

We were very disappointed with Erie Canal Village.  It was fun when we were there probably 30 yr ago but now the buildings are in need of repair and they used to have people in period clothing at each of the buildings, tavern, blacksmith, schoolhouse, etc.  Today there was a woman in the gift shop and a conductor for the train but all the other buildings were empty and you just walked through. There used to be a boat ride what would actually be pulled by the mules and would take you down the Erie Canal.  The boat was in the water but it no longer was used because of the disrepair.    William loves history and he explained everything we saw to Matthew.  I love that about him; that he explains how everything worked or how things were done in this time period.  Quite a few times Matthew was shocked to realize there was no electricity and things had to be done by candle light, and that people went to bed when the sun when down and got up when it came up!  It was a hard concept for him to grasp at first.

At the train station, waiting for the train.

We drove into the city to get some lunch.  I wanted to stop at Wendy's and eat from the value menu.  Matt said "I hate Wendy's".  "Their chicken nuggets are horrible".  I said "Then eat a hamburger". (he wanted the toy with the kids meal) He said, "I never ate a hamburger before but I guess I will try it".  I could not believe he never ate a hamburger before but I ordered a cheeseburger and he loved it!!!

Aww....how wonderful that you got to spend time with him and take him to all those neat places! He looks like he's having so much fun in those photos! It's a shame that they haven't repaired things. I have noticed that with a few places around here and it makes me sad for future generations.

Sounds like a wonderful day with lots of memories for him to have.  Just got back from spending 4 days vacationing with all 5 of our grandchildren.  Loved every minute of it and I know they will always remember it.  Nothing better then getting to spend time with them!

@SealedbyGrace - Isn't that sad that they just let them go?

@GrannyHappyNanny - How fabulous for you.  I have not had all of mine together since we have had all 7 of them.  Jealous, I want my grands to know each other but I don't see that happening.

Sounds like a good time was had by all- I laugh about Matt saying he never ate a hamburger. You know my Alyssa wouldn't eat a burger until she was almost 12 isn't that weird she to loves `em but loves anything with chicken better.

Great vacation and memories!!  So sad though about the Erie Canal trip.  It seems like something that would have been thriving from visitors.  Schools and homeschoolers alike as well as families.  Hmmm.  Wonder what happened?

I'll see my grands tomorrow :D

@primrozie - Will said it is privately owned and maybe with the way the economy was, they could not handle the upkeep.  It is sad.  It was a great field trip for our homeschool group back in the day.

It does sound like a good time. Too bad to hear about the way the place is with no clerks or attendants around, seems like it would be a little more interesting to tourists/kids/whoever, if they continued dressing in the period clothing.  It is a good thing that your fellow was able to explain it all and make it a good experience for the little man.

How funny-don't run into a kid very often that hasn't had a hamburger!
